THE COMPANY DIDN'T COME FIRST. THE FUEL DID.
VP Racing was founded in San Antonio, Texas, in 1975 with a simple goal: build a better racing fuel than the ones already available. Our first product was C12.
What's unusual is what happened next. C12 wasn't created by an established fuel company looking for a new product to sell. The fuel came first, the company followed. As more racers discovered the blend and the performance it delivered, demand grew, and VP Racing grew with it.
Every product in today's catalogue can trace part of its story back to that first drum.
THE BEST FUEL IS BUILT CLOSE TO THE ENGINE.
Early partnerships with engine builders Buddy Morrison and David Reher helped establish a philosophy that still drives VP Racing today. Fuel development didn't happen in isolation. As engines evolved, VP Racing refined its fuels to meet new demands, and as fuel technology advanced, engine builders gained new opportunities to extract performance. Each breakthrough informed the next, creating a development cycle that pushed both fuel and engine technology forward.
That relationship became more than a supplier-customer arrangement. It became a development cycle built around solving performance problems together.
Fifty years later, the principle remains the same. The best fuels aren't developed at a distance. They're developed alongside the people pushing engines to their limits.
RACERS STARTED PAYING FOR THE SOLUTION.
A product becomes a business when somebody is willing to buy it. Drag racing legend Warren Johnson became VP Racing's first paying customer. This was not a sponsorship agreement, not a promotional partnership, but a purchase.
As competitors including Warren Johnson and Bob Glidden found success using C12, word spread throughout the racing community. The fuel earned credibility the same way every successful racing product does: through results.
Long before VP Racing became a global brand, racers were already proving the value of the blend on the track.
C12 IS STILL DOING THE JOB IT WAS CREATED TO DO
Half a century later, VP Racing has expanded far beyond a single fuel. The company now supplies racing fuels, lubricants, additives, and specialty products used across countless forms of motorsport. Yet C12 remains part of the lineup.
More than fifty years later, C12 remains part of the VP Racing lineup, continuing to serve the same purpose it did when it was first developed: solving a problem racers couldn't solve with the fuels already available. That's why its story still matters today.
History in a museum is nostalgia. History attached to an active product is proof.
