WHAT THE COLOUR TELLS YOU BEFORE THE LABEL DOES.
Walk through any paddock in Europe and you'll see it immediately. Yellow, green, blue, orange, purple, and red fuels lined up beneath awnings and beside race trailers. The colour isn't there to make a product stand out. It's there to help identify it.
At a glance, colour can tell a racer whether they're looking at the right family of fuel before they ever read the label. In a busy paddock, that's often enough to stop the wrong drum reaching the car.
It's not a precise identifier. More than one VP Racing fuel may share the same colour while serving completely different applications. What matters most is always the label, part number, and specification. nThe colour provides the first clue, the SKU confirms the answer.
WHERE IDENTIFICATION BECOMES COMPLIANCE.
Before a race is won or lost, many fuels face inspection. Sanctioning bodies routinely verify fuel legality through testing and measurement, checking criteria such as lead content, oxygen content, specific gravity, and dielectric properties. Long before those tests begin, colour often provides the first point of reference.
A fuel that appears inconsistent with the requirements of a class immediately raises questions. Not because colour proves compliance, but because it helps identify potential issues before formal testing begins. This benefits organizers, but it also benefits competitors.
WHEN NO COLOUR IS THE POINT.
Not every fuel is dyed, many modern unleaded and oxygenated racing fuels are intentionally colourless, particularly in applications where regulations leave little room for unnecessary additives.
In those cases, the absence of colour becomes part of the specification. A clear fuel doesn't provide less information. It simply shifts the responsibility of identification to the label, product code, and published specification.
That's why the most important rule remains unchanged regardless of colour, never identify a fuel by appearance alone. While the colour may provide a useful clue, the label tells the story.
